Em algumas regiões do globo terrestre o calor do subsolo, denominado energia geotérmica, aproxima-se da superfície e torna-se plausível a sua utilização. Um trocador de calor utiliza água aquecida, de origem geotérmica, para aquecer água de 30°C a 80°C com vazão mássica de 1,0 kg/s. A instalação é bitubular, com escoamento em contracorrente, tubo interno em parede fina com diâmetro de 2,0 cm, e coeficiente global de transferência de calor 650 W/m²K. O fluxo de água geotérmica está a 150°C, com vazão mássica de 2 kg/s. A Figura 1 traz a representação do trocador.
